ASUS Eee PC 900 8.9 inch
20GB SSD Linux NetBook or ASUS Eee PC 900 8.9 inch 12GB SSD Windows XP Home Netbook
The
new 8.9" Asus Eee PC 900 is the second generation of original Eee PC. It upgrades your options for 'on the go' computing.
Weighing slightly more than 2 lbs. ASUS is leading the market into the year of the 'Netbook' generation. Leo Laporte
of TWIT, one of the best PodCasts, is always raving about his Asus Eee PC. Andy Ihnatho calls into the TWIT Podcast
from this backyard using the Skype program which come with both the 7" model and the 9" Linux version of the new
Eee PC 900 line.
Asus has broken into an area that many mobile consumers have been waiting for. With the built-in
WLAN (Wi-Fi) you can connect at hot-spots like Cosi and Starbucks, or around the house and be interacting with
friends, with both sound and picture using Skype and be truly one of early adopters of the Netbook phenomena.
I
think the new Eee PC 900 is going to be worth the price over the cost of the 7" model and you should opt for the new
model because of all the improvements in the new package which is almost the same as the old package, such as
better screen resolution of 1024 x 600 Vs. 800x480 on a 8.9" LCD Vs. 7" LCD for starters. Also the Eee PC 900 packs
twice the punch with 1GB of installed DDR2 memory.

HP 2133 Mini-Note PC 8.9
inch NetBook
(The following was written at the time HP released the 2133. The prices are from HP's
site. I will be taking a fresh when I rewrite this column, soon).
The price you pay at the low end,
$499 pre-configured with Linux (one of 5 choices) and at high end, $984 when you chose 2GB of SDRAM, the 1.6 GHz
processor and the 120GB 7200rpm hard drive.
One way it can be configured, at $984 can it still be referred to
as a NetBook? Will I need the faster hard drive running at 7200 rpm to see the best video performance? Which drive
uses up less battery, the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm? Will the extra $50 for the 2GB of SDRAM Vs.1GB be worth it? That
part seems like a good deal. But should I still be interested in a fully configured Mini-Note PC when the price is
nowhere near mini? Probably not unless money is no object. The HP has the same size screen as most other Netbooks,
but it boasts the highest screen resolution of any other Netbook. However it is larger, heavier, has a spinning
hard drive and can cost a lot more, depending how it is configured. It does have some extra features and a larger
battery, adding to its weight. The larger battery has to spin the hard drive, so I'm not yet sure how the HP will
compete in usage times, compared to Netbooks with solid state drives. You might want to check the street price
to determine whether the extra price is worth the extra size, weight and available features to make this a better
choice then other Netbooks.
Stay tuned for my update.
